CHIESA DEI SS. COSMA E DAMIANO
Thought to be one of the most beautiful Sicilian Baroque churches, it was founded around 1500 but assumed its present appearance thanks to its reconstruction carried out in 1721-1725, by the architect Giuseppe Mariani. The solution of the tambour which inside repeats the profile of the space and its centric hexagonal layout is interesting and original, whilst outside it is in the shape of a quadrangular prism. Two large paintings, important works of the Flemish painter Guglielmo Borremans, depict the ‘Immacolata and the Madonna presenting Baby Jesus to Saint Chiara’. Some paintings by the artist Andrea Carreca from Trapani ( XVII century), and the seventeenth century wooden crucifix are also kept here.
Decorative elements
The articulated and vibrant interior is made even more beautiful by the splendid stuccoes by Francesco Guastalla and Vincenzo Perez from 1722, joined in 1757 by those made by Gabriele Messina. There are also two magnificent statues by Di Giacomo Serpotta (1722) depicting Justice and Charity.
